On the anniversary of the March 12, 2004 uprising, which began in the city of Qamshlo, we remember one of the earliest #Kurdish popular uprisings against the former regime in Syria.
It began as a peaceful movement through which #Kurdish expressed their rejection of oppression and injustice, demanding dignity, justice, and human rights.
This uprising marked an important moment in the history of the struggle for rights, affirming that when the voice of the people rises in defense of their dignity, it can become the beginning of real change.
During that period, many Kurds were subjected to arrest and persecution, and families lost their loved ones between those killed and those detained.
These violations remind us today of the ongoing need to work toward justice and to ensure fair accountability for all those involved in human rights violations, in a way that guarantees justice for the victims.
We recall this anniversary to reaffirm our belief that the path to justice passes through the values of nonviolence, dialogue, and building community awareness.
Calling for accountability for violations is not a temporary demand tied to a specific moment in time; it is a continuing right that does not fade with the passing of years. With every year that passes, the memory of the victims remains alive, and the call for justice and accountability endures regardless of changing circumstances.
Commemorating March 12 is not only about remembering the pain, but also about renewing our commitment to the values of nonviolence and collective action toward a more just and peaceful society—one where human dignity is protected and people’s voices are heard without fear.
