Amid Escalation… A Call to Uphold Humanity
Urgent Distress Appeal

Position Statement by “Ahimsa” Nonviolent Youth Activists from Ahimsa Organization for Nonviolence Regarding the Events of January 19, 2026

In light of the dangerous and ongoing military escalation witnessed in Northeast Syria, accompanied by shelling and the direct targeting of residential neighborhoods and civilians, we—the activists of “Ahimsa”—issue this urgent humanitarian appeal. We warn that what is taking place today can no longer be described as a mere military conflict, but has escalated into a systematic war of extermination against the civilian population, particularly minorities, amid alarming international silence and an escalation that disregards all humanitarian considerations.

The continuation of this unchecked violence, the targeting of populated areas, and the threat to the safe existence of local communities constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. This places the lives of children, women, and the elderly in immediate danger, once again turning civilians into fuel for a conflict in which they have no part.

At Ahimsa, we affirm that targeting minorities, terrorizing them, or exploiting their presence as a military tool constitutes a grave moral and humanitarian crime that cannot be justified under any pretext. Such actions reflect a policy of exclusion and extermination that we categorically reject. We firmly believe that the logic of militarization has never produced anything but more bloodshed, deeper divisions, and the entrenchment of hatred among the components of society.

Based on our unwavering commitment to the principles of nonviolence, we call for:

  • An immediate and comprehensive halt to all forms of violence and military escalation in Northeast Syria.
  • The protection and neutralization of civilians and residential areas, and the guaranteed delivery of humanitarian assistance without obstruction.
  • The safeguarding of minorities’ rights to life, safety, and dignity, and the rejection of any policies of exclusion, extermination, or demographic change.

We also address a clear and direct appeal to European states to assume their moral and legal responsibilities and to intervene urgently and effectively in order to:

  • Prevent the continuation of violence and halt crimes committed against civilians.
  • Exert serious pressure on all parties to stop the escalation and protect the population.
  • Support pathways of accountability for grave violations and prevent impunity.

International silence—particularly from Europe—regarding what is happening today does not represent neutrality; rather, it contributes to deepening the tragedy and opens the door to further crimes against innocent civilians.

We further call upon Syrians, women and men alike, across all affiliations, to reject incitement and hate speech, and to uphold humanity as the only viable choice in confronting violence. Syria cannot be built through extermination, nor protected by weapons, but through nonviolence, justice, and mutual recognition of everyone’s rights.

At Ahimsa, we renew our commitment to defending the right of civilians in Northeast Syria to life and safety, and we emphasize that protecting children and safeguarding civilians is a humanitarian obligation that admits no delay or compromise.
