Ahimsa Organization for Nonviolence implemented the fifth capacity-building session titled “Nonviolent Communication” as part of the “Change Makers” project, with the aim of strengthening nonviolent communication skills and understanding its role in reducing conflict and building safe relationships within the community.

The session included a set of interactive activities that helped participants explore their communication patterns and how these affect understanding others. The main activities included:

  • The circular whisper game, which aimed to show how messages can become distorted as they are passed along, highlighting the importance of clear and accurate communication.
  • A video presentation focusing on the concept of individual identity and the importance of accepting differences.
  • A group discussion highlighting the importance of expressing a sense of belonging to one’s identity.
  • Role-playing conflict scenarios, followed by group discussions on nonviolent ways to deal with sensitive situations.
  • Practicing the “giraffe language” as a tool for nonviolent communication.
  • A focused discussion to strengthen active listening skills and expression without judgment or emotional reactions.

The session increased participants’ awareness of the importance of nonviolent communication as a tool for building trust, reducing everyday conflicts, and creating an environment based on mutual respect.

One participant reflected on the importance of communication by saying:
“After learning communication skills, I felt that the way we spoke changed during the focused discussion with my colleague. The change was not only in how we expressed ourselves, but also in how we listened and felt. We started listening to each other more sincerely and connecting ideas more accurately, which gave us a different feeling.”
