Ahimsa Organization conducted a training workshop on data collection and the use of Kobo Toolbox as part of the Internal Knowledge Exchange capacity-building program. Following a survey conducted among the Ahimsa team, the topic of data collection fundamentals was selected. A team member from Ahimsa delivered the training over three days at the Ahimsa Nonviolence Center in Al-Hasakah.
Topics covered during the training included:
- Types of data
- Data sources and websites commonly used for designing electronic surveys in the region.
- Introduction to surveys, with advantages and disadvantages.
- Designing forms and their importance.
- Methodology and standards for building a survey.
- Types and sections of surveys.
- How to create high-quality and effective forms in terms of content and structure.
- Types of questions in a survey.
- Common mistakes to avoid when writing forms.
- Important notes for form designers.
- Steps to create paper forms for each group to later implement in Kobo Toolbox
Day 2 focused on:
- Getting familiar with the Kobo Toolbox application and creating personal accounts.
- Practical explanation and use of all question icons, including closed, open, and mixed question types.
- Understanding skip logic and setting conditional questions while avoiding programming errors.
- Using validation criteria, adding codes, and defining question-specific conditions.
- Performing calculations and coding formulas.
- Adjusting form settings and understanding the function of each option.
- Making questions mandatory and modifying values for closed questions, explaining the importance of data column changes.
- Learning calculations and setting up matrices, publishing links, and accessing analyzed data.
- Participants created their own surveys individually
Due to the importance of the training and the value gained, participants suggested a third day to reinforce the knowledge. Day 3 included:
- Conditional questions and modifying data column values.
- Calculations and validation criteria.
- Writing codes, setting conditions, and using formulas for summation.
- Republishing and editing links.
- Opening links online or offline.
- Form settings and page layout adjustments
By the end of the training, participants successfully designed their own electronic surveys in Kobo Toolbox, reflecting their needs and work areas.
They were able to analyze collected data and extract results practically, demonstrating high proficiency in applying the program independently, reflecting a deep understanding of the tools and their potential use in future work.
