Ahimsa Organization held a session on “Community Mapping” as part of its team capacity-building activities in Al-Hasakah on January 31, 2024, within the “Masar” project, under the supervision of specialized trainers in nonviolence.

The session aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of their communities by exploring diverse perspectives, and to strengthen their ability to identify community development issues and address them through participatory approaches.

The session focused on several key themes:

  1. Understanding the community through multiple perspectives.
  2. Identifying community development issues and challenges.
  3. Drawing a map of the community (town/city) and identifying its main landmarks.
  4. Defining roads, boundaries, and important geographic areas.
  5. Identifying local resources and assets.
  6. Mapping available services and facilities within the community.
  7. Exploring available opportunities and potentials.
  8. Identifying problems and concerns within the community.
  9. Highlighting gaps (unmet needs), particularly regarding women’s participation in public and political life.
  10. Indicating unsafe or restricted areas.

During the session, participants were divided into groups, with each group working on creating a community map of their area using colored pens and symbols, aiming to express their perceptions and feelings toward different spaces within the community.

The session was highly interactive, combining teamwork and critical thinking, and provided participants with a safe and supportive environment for expression, analysis, and knowledge exchange.
