On February 22, 2023
Ahimsa Organization held the tenth session of its capacity-building training series in Al-Hasakah, as part of “Masar” Project, in cooperation with the Steps Center in Lebanon and under the guidance of trainers specialized in nonviolence and peaceful conflict transformation.
This session followed the major earthquake that occurred on February 6, 2023, and the discussions focused on:
- How the groups were affected by the earthquake.
- How they responded to it.
Participants unanimously expressed a strong sense of responsibility during the earthquake, yet this feeling was accompanied by a sense of helplessness. They became more able to distinguish between violence and nonviolence and to identify their own positions.
Some participants noted, “We wished we could have acted collectively during that difficult period, but the lack of tools and mechanisms prevented us from doing so. This experience strengthened our conviction about the importance of having clear plans and strategies for nonviolent intervention in future crises.”
